Septic Tank vs. Drain Field
A septic system has two functional halves. The tank separates and stores. The drain field accepts and treats. They fail differently, they cost differently, and confusing them is the most expensive error in septic ownership.
Tank-side problems are components, and components get replaced. Drain-field failure has no component to swap.

The observation that tells you which
The liquid level in the tank relative to the outlet pipe. It requires the tank to be opened by a contractor, and it is worth more than any amount of speculation.
At or just below the outlet: effluent is leaving normally, so the constraint is not downstream. Well above the outlet: effluent is not leaving freely, and the problem is in the outlet, the line, the distribution box or the field. Well below: possibly a leaking tank.
Signs that point at the tank side
- Slow drains that resolved after pumping and stayed resolved.
- A gradual slowdown across months with no service in years.
- Odor at the tank lids specifically.
- A clogged effluent filter identified and cleaned.
- An alarm resolved by replacing a pump or float.
- A sudden onset affecting everything, consistent with a blockage in the line.
- A liquid level at the outlet after service.
Signs that point at the field
- Wet, soft or spongy ground over the field in dry weather.
- Wastewater visible at the surface.
- Grass over the field markedly greener or faster-growing.
- Odor outdoors over the field, persisting across weather.
- A tank that returns to a high level soon after service.
- Backups recurring within weeks of each pumping.
- Symptoms reliably following heavy rain or snowmelt.
- Symptoms that appear only under heavy household water use.
How the tank damages the field
The two halves are not independent, and this is the mechanism that turns a small problem into a large one.
When a tank is overdue, or an outlet baffle has failed, solids and grease pass into the field. There they accelerate the thickening of the biological layer at the soil interface, reducing the field’s ability to accept effluent. The damage is cumulative and largely irreversible — pumping later stops it getting worse but does not undo it. This is precisely why tank maintenance is field protection.
Why contractors sometimes get this wrong
Not out of bad faith, usually — but a field diagnosis made from surface evidence alone is incomplete, and a wet patch is a persuasive-looking symptom.
A sound field diagnosis requires the tank to have been opened, the liquid level noted, the baffles checked, the distribution box located and opened, and surface-water sources traced. If a replacement recommendation arrives without those steps, ask for them before authorising anything.

- Watch the trend across visits rather than reacting to a single reading.

Common questions
Which fails first, the tank or the field?
Tanks are durable and their failures are usually component failures rather than structural ones. Fields have a finite working life that depends heavily on how well the tank side was maintained. In practice the field is what most often reaches the end of its usefulness — frequently because of tank-side neglect years earlier.
Can I replace just the tank?
Yes, where the tank is structurally unsound and the field is still accepting effluent. It is a much smaller project than a full replacement. Whether it is permissible as a standalone piece of work, and what design applies, is a local question for the authority with jurisdiction.
Does pumping help the drain field?
Indirectly and importantly — it prevents further solids reaching the field. What it cannot do is reverse damage already done or restore capacity the soil interface has lost. Pumping is field protection going forward, not field repair.
How do I find out where my drain field is?
Start with the system design or as-built drawing, permit records, or any prior inspection report. Absent paperwork, look for parallel lines of differing grass growth, subtle ridges or depressions, and the direction the outlet line leaves the tank. A contractor can locate it during an inspection — and once located, record it with measurements and photographs.
