Septic Problems After a Power Outage
Whether a power cut affects your septic system depends on one thing: whether the system needs electricity to work. A conventional gravity system does not. A system with a pump, controls or treatment components does.
If yours needs power, the safe assumption during an outage is that effluent is accumulating rather than moving onward — so the useful response is to cut water use for the duration.

During the outage
- Assume the pump is not running if your system has one.
- Cut water use to the minimum: no laundry, no dishwasher, short showers, minimal flushing.
- Shut the supply valve on any running toilet.
- Do not open the tank or pump chamber to check anything.
- If you have a generator, do not connect the septic pump unless you know the circuit and the load are appropriate — get that confirmed in advance, not during an outage.

When power comes back

- Count the lids in the yard — a separate chamber lid distinct from the tank lids suggests a pump.

A short outage plan worth agreeing in advance

Long outages and unoccupied properties
An extended outage at an occupied house is a water-management problem: nothing is moving onward, so the answer is to add as little as possible. An extended outage at an empty property is a different situation and it is frequently handled badly because it looks like nothing is happening.
Nothing is entering the system, so nothing accumulates — but the monitoring is also off, and a system with aeration or treatment components may be affected by the interruption in a way a conventional gravity system is not. In cold weather, an unoccupied property with no flow also carries a higher freezing risk.

Common questions
Can I use water during a power outage?
