What a camera inspection can and cannot establish
A camera inspection is one of the few septic diagnostics that produces something a homeowner can look at directly. That is its great strength and its most reliable source of error: footage is persuasive in a way that a probe reading is not, and persuasive is not the same as conclusive.

What a camera is genuinely good at
Within the pipe it can traverse, a camera answers questions nothing else answers as cheaply.
- Whether the building sewer is obstructed, and by what — roots, a foreign object, collapsed material, or accumulated grease.
- Whether there is a structural break, an offset joint, or a section that has deflected under load.
- Whether the pipe holds standing water along a run, which suggests a low point or a downstream restriction.
- What material the pipe is, which matters for what a repair involves.
- Where along the run something sits, if the operator uses a locator alongside the camera.
Where a camera cannot go
The limits are physical, not a matter of operator skill, and they cover most of a septic system.

The interpretation problem
Footage shows a state. It does not show causation, and it rarely shows significance. Both of those are judgements laid over the picture by whoever is narrating it.
- Roots visible in a pipe do not prove roots are restricting flow. Fine roots at a joint are extremely common in older systems and may occupy a trivial fraction of the bore.
- Standing water in a lateral does not prove the lateral is at fault. If the surrounding soil is saturated, the pipe fills because it has nowhere to drain — the water in the pipe is the symptom of a soil problem, not a pipe problem.
- A camera stopping does not prove collapse. It can stop at a bend it cannot negotiate, at an offset joint, at a low point holding water, or because the cable has run out.
- A clean-looking pipe does not prove the system is healthy. The pipe is the part least likely to be the problem in a struggling septic system.
Questions worth asking about a survey
- Where did the camera enter, and how far did it travel in each direction?
- Where exactly did it stop, and why did it stop there?
- Was a locator used, so the findings can be tied to a position on the property?
- What proportion of the pipe bore is the obstruction actually occupying?
- Was the survey done with the system in its normal state, or after pumping?
- Can I have a copy of the recording, not only stills?
- What did you assess that the camera could not see, and how?
What to do with the recording
Ask for it, keep it, and note the date. A survey done today is a baseline against which a survey in five years is meaningful — and if the same contractor returns with a different account of the same run, you have the original.
It is also the single most useful thing to hand a second contractor if you want another opinion, because it removes the cost of repeating the survey.
- Request the full recording, not a summary or a selection of stills.
- Record the date, the entry point, and the direction of travel.
- Store it with the rest of the system records rather than in an email thread.
When a camera is the right tool, and when it is not

What a camera cannot compensate for
Two limitations are worth naming because they are invisible in the footage and they change how much weight a survey deserves.
- A camera shows the inside of a pipe under whatever flow exists at that moment. A restriction that only matters under load — when the whole household drains at once — can look unremarkable during a survey done on a quiet weekday morning.
- A camera has no depth perception and no scale unless the operator provides one. An obstruction that looks like it fills the pipe on a wide-angle lens may occupy a fraction of the bore, and the lens exaggerates whatever is nearest to it.
How camera findings interact with the rest of a diagnosis
A survey rarely stands alone. Where it becomes genuinely powerful is alongside two other pieces of evidence, because together they separate causes that a camera alone cannot.

Keeping the survey useful over time
A camera survey ages better than almost any other septic record, because it is a picture of a specific run of pipe rather than a judgement about it. Three habits make that worth something.
- Store the recording with your system records, not in an email thread. Note the date, the entry point and the direction of travel on the file itself.
- Write down the distance readings the operator called out, if they used a counter. Those numbers are what make a second survey comparable.
- If work is done as a result, ask for a survey afterwards from the same entry point. The pair is the only real evidence that the work achieved what it was supposed to.
Common questions
Is a camera inspection worth paying for?
It depends entirely on the question you are trying to answer. For a suspected blockage or damage in the line between the house and the tank, it is often the most direct evidence available. For a drainfield question it addresses the wrong part of the system.
The contractor showed me roots. Does that mean the pipe needs replacing?
Not by itself. Roots are common and their significance depends on how much of the pipe they occupy and whether flow is genuinely restricted. Ask what proportion of the bore is affected and whether clearing has been tried.
Can a camera tell me if my drainfield has failed?
No. A camera can sometimes travel a lateral and show whether it is holding water, but the treatment happens in the soil around the pipe and no camera reaches that. Drainfield assessment is a separate exercise.
Should I ask for the footage?
Always, and keep it with your system records. It costs the contractor nothing, it is the cheapest second opinion you will ever get, and it is a baseline for whatever happens next.
