Septic capacity is one of the more common reasons a home extension gets redesigned late and expensively. The constraint is real, it is knowable in advance, and it is almost always cheaper to discover before the drawings are finished than after.

The core fact surprises people: residential septic systems are generally sized against the number of bedrooms, not the number of bathrooms or the floor area. A loft conversion that adds no bathroom can still be the thing that triggers a system upgrade.

Why bedrooms rather than bathrooms
